In 1848 the railway aided transport of goods to and from the docks. Coal was brought from Yorkshire and exported via Grimsby. Grimsby fish was also sold in Billingsgate fish market due to rail links that went directly to London. The first proper fish dock opened in 1836 and Grimsby became influential in the commercial fishing industry. 

By 1900 a tenth of the fish eaten in the UK landed in Grimsby. 

Grimsby's Royal Dock was the UK's largest base for minesweepers during WW2. A lot of men died due to the dangerous nature of the job and there is a memorial near the dock tower commemorating their loss. 

After the war, the fishing industry declined and many firms stopped trading in Grimsby. This led to the end of a way of life that had lasted for generations and as a result there was high unemployment. Many sought work in the food processing industry that is now prevalent there.
