Industrial Past 

In the early 19th century, Merthyr was known as the iron capital of the world. The first steam powered rail journey took place here in 1804, travelling 9m from the Penydarren iron works to the Glamorganshire Canal.

The christian religion was introduced through the majority of Wales by the Romans and later by monks from Ireland France who traversed the region via rivers and valleys. No permanent settlement was established until well into The Middle Ages. People were self-sufficient and lived by farming and selling their produce. Merthyr was near coal, iron ore, limestone, timber and water making it an ideal location for an iron works. The explosion of The Industrial Revolution increased the demand for iron and therefore led to the rapid expansion of Merthyr's iron operations. At its height, Merthyr was the base of four of the greatest iron works in the world:- Dowlais Iron Works, Plymouth Iron works, Cyfarthfa Iron Works and Penydarren. Two families owned these; the Guests and the Crawshays. The need to export goods led to the construction of the Glamorganshire Canal running from the iron works to Cardiff Bay creating other business ventures along its route. With growing industry in Merthyr, rail companies built routes linking it with other ports and settlements in Britain. The Vale of Neath Railway, Taff Vale Railway and Great Western Railway shared routes to allow ease of access through rocky country which gave them great engineering challenges. 

The demand for iron was impacted by the Royal Navy who needed cannons for their ships. “The China District” or “Little Hell” was a slum filled with the poorest of society who were regarded as a separate class and had a bad reputation. The streets were crowded and had bad ventilation and open sewers which led to diseases such as typhoid and cholera. As the 19th century went on the internal location of Merthyr was undesirable for iron production, so some ironworkers migrated abroad. 

In the 1870s, coal mining South of the town led to an increase in population and mining companies sprang up at Merthyr Vale, Treharris and Bedlinog.

After WW2, companies moved into Merthyr such as Hoover, who opened a large washing machine factory. It became the largest employer in the area employing nearly 5000 people, thus giving the unemployed from the declining iron and coal trade work. More women were also employed in this sector as it wasn't heavy industry. 

Fun Facts About Merthyr Tydfil 

It is said to be named after Tydfil, the daughter of King Brychan of Brycheiniog, who was killed by pagans in 480 C E. A church was built on the memorial site of her burial. Admiral Lord Nelson visited Merthyr to witness a cannon being made for his ship. In 1844, 50,000 tonnes of rails left one iron works alone to be used for the railway across Russia to Siberia.
