Newcastle central railway station, opened by Queen Victoria in 1850 was the first covered railway station in the world. 

Newcastle has a rare tourist attraction underground. The Victoria Tunnel was opened in 1842 to be used as a means to carry coal to the River Tyne. During the Second World War it was used as an air raid shelter. Nowadays you can visit it and take a guided tour.

A desperate mum 

Paula, 42, is a mum of 3 who had to become a Newcastle escort after her husband died suddenly due to a short illness: “I worked part time so I could take care of the kids after school and Joe worked full time. When he died I couldn't manage. I needed a job that paid enough to support us and I didn't want to take the kids out of our family home, where they had so many memories with their dad.” 

Paula admitted that escorting would not be her job of choice and said it was hard to “go with other men” so soon after her husband's death. But she felt that she had no other option after applying for several other better paid jobs and getting no response and also because she knew she had to be flexible in order to take care of her children. 

She says her sister has been a Godsend and looks after her brood whilst she escorts. Luckily her sister works from home so can easily watch the children whilst she's working. Paula, though at first found the job tough, has learned to live with the idea so that she can provide for her family and pay the bills: “I'm not embarrassed to be an escort. I just wish I could do better than selling my body as a job. It wasn't through choice but necessity that I ended up in this situation.” I consoled Paula and said that she's brave and a really good parent to think of her children and their needs before herself. 

..”I'm a good actress.” She laughed ..”no one would ever notice that this isn't my job of choice. When I'm with a client I'm just thinking about the money and how I can pay the rent this month now or buy my kids some new clothes. Don't get me wrong, the clients I see treat me well and I've never had any bad ones yet. So that helps.” 

Paula isn't the only girl doing this job that just does it for the money. We are all hustlers and good at the game. Just because a job is well paid, doesn't mean you have to like it. That's life and you either have the thick skin to be able to do this job or you don't. You have to be a really strong willed, confident woman to be an escort, and be able to deal with the nature of the job itself.

Memorable clients 

Paula offers meets at the maximum of an hour at a time, saying this length makes it easier for her to do the job. 

She said one of her most memorable experiences was with her very first client: “I was so nervous and he could tell straight away. He was a real gentleman about it and we chatted for a while before we actually did anything. When it came down to the sex part he was very gentle. I'm glad he was my first as if I'd had a really bad experience it would have been difficult to carry on with it.” The gent has since become one of her regulars: “He's the one who listens and asks about my day when usually it's the other way around,” she laughs.

Colonel Porter's Emporium (NE1 1LF) This bar pays homage to a famous brewer. They serve old school cocktails, strong rum and “boozy” tea service in a funky, chilled location.
